Cigarettes After Sex recently revealed that Partisan Records will release their brand-new album, X's, on July 12. It is their first studio album since the highly regarded Cry released in 2019.
Greg Gonzalez, the main singer of Cigarettes After Sex, has captured every feeling a romantic arc evokes with his collection of raw, imagistic, occasionally sultry vignettes set to captivating, slowburn pop tunes. But unlike other albums, which drew inspiration from a variety of relationships, X's focuses mostly on a single, four-year romance.
The tour, named after their new album, stops at Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tennessee in June, and their largest-ever headline performances in the UK take place at The O2 Arena in London on November 12 and 13.
September and October will be dedicated to the North American leg. Early 2025 dates for Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Jakarta, Bangkok, Cape Town, Pretoria, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Auckland are scheduled.
Cigarettes After Sex is described as "elemental, hazy and romantic, but with a noir edge underneath Gonzalez's androgynous voice" as well as "sweet and sentimental" by Christina Cacouris in a feature for Noisey. "As the band's name suggests, it's reminiscent of lying in bed, but its ambient qualities don't prevent it from being music you can dance to."
Gonzalez cites Miles Davis as having great impact and Françoise Hardy as his favorite singer. In an interview with Sound of Boston, he also mentioned that movies like L'Avventura and The Double Life of Veronique had an influence on the feel and sound of the music in "Affection" and their LP. The band lists Julee Cruise, Cocteau Twins, and The Trinity Session by the Cowboy Junkies as additional influences.
Eardrums Music compares Cigarettes After Sex to Mazzy Star and calls the band "slow, dreamy and beautiful with gorgeous, tender vocals and very good lyrics." Swell Tone's music bloggers characterize Cigarettes After Sex as a band that produces "melancholy, slow pop that will sweetly rock any listener into a listless stupor."
Jae Pyl writes in her review of "Affection" for Independentmusicnews.com, "there's just such an intimacy to Cigarettes After Sex's sound that it's impossible to not let it into the pit of your belly."
The Texas band's new song, Tejano Blues, which showcases their dreamy, hazy indie-pop sound, was also just recently released.
